Backing mixes explained: matching the packing to the crucible

By the Magna technical team · August 2026 · 1 min read

Magnesia and zirconia backing mixes

The backing mix is the refractory that packs the crucible into the furnace. Its job is to support the crucible evenly and to expand and contract at a similar rate as the furnace heats and cools.

Match the packing to the crucible and it stays fully supported through every cycle, which means longer crucible life and fewer surprises. A mismatch leaves the wall unsupported and shortens the life of an otherwise sound crucible.
