Melting platinum group metals in lime stabilised zirconia

By the Magna technical team · August 2026 · 1 min read

Lime stabilised zirconia crucibles

Platinum group metal refining runs hotter than almost any other melt, and the glassy, siliceous slags involved attack most refractories quickly. Lime stabilised zirconia holds up where others fail, with a service temperature to 2200°C.

Its resistance to those slags, combined with a dense body, is what keeps the metal clean and the crucible in service through repeated high temperature pours.
